Onboarding New Staff during a Pandemic

Goal to bring together small groups of staff and ministry leaders to meet with the new staff person and orient them to their new ministry context. For safety reasons, determine ideal size and locations for groups to meet. In May of 2020, groups of up to five met outside, on campus, for up to 45 minutes.

Prior to your meetings, invite leaders to consider what they would like to talk about. The time will pass quickly. Also make sure the staff and membership directories are up to date for all staff, staff families, and members of key ministry team(s).

Bring your own chair, gloves and a face mask that work well for you, and whatever you’ll need for an outdoor meeting. If you are unable to meet these precautions, feel free to set up a meeting on Zoom instead of in person (same date/time apply).

Consider the new staff member’s family in your plans. Invite spouses and other family members to join gatherings as appropriate, or set up special meeting opportunities especially for them.

Clean and create a welcoming office environment. Stock workspace with directories, policy and other handbooks, new office supplies, and a few of the new staff member’s favorite things. Include copies of recent books read by staff teams.

Utilize local Chamber of Commerce and tourism resources to help orient new staff to your ministry context. Whatever it is that you brag about in your hometown, find a safe and creative way to share it. Mark favorite shops, restaurants, services, and other area churches and agencies.

Accept that onboarding will look different in this season. Adjust your timelines and checklists accordingly. Here’s a handy guide to typical staff transition.

Be graceful with yourself and others. Someday you’ll look back and marvel about life in these times. For now, get some rest, and oh yes, wash your hands, gently.  You’ve got this.
