Research Project Chapter Two Theological Foundations

Chapter Two

I once relied on personal spiritual practice as largely solo endeavors. But with each instance of being uprooted from one ministry to move to another, my wellbeing began to fray. Personal spirituality alone was no longer adequate.

I am thrilled to continue sharing the five chapters of my research project with you. Chapter two lays out the personal and theological foundations of my project and briefly summarizes the history of transitional ministry to provide context for why this project matters.

I share my background as an interim—or transitional—pastor, the challenges I faced in my early posts, and my attempts to build a community of conversation partners with others in similar roles. And I describe the biblical mentors I found in Moses, the Apostle Paul, and Titus, whose stories inspired me as I sought to deepen and my professional and spiritual relationships.

My experiences and reflections culminated in three pastoral theologies that would guide the next phases of my project and which I also share in this chapter.
